NDIS Budget Reset: 5 Steps for Families

NDIS Budget Reset: 5 Steps for Families

If you have been part of the NDIS community for a while, you know that change is the only constant. As we move through 2026, many families are hearing the term NDIS budget reset more frequently. With new reforms coming into play, the way plans are managed and funds are allocated is shifting toward a model that prioritises long-term outcomes and functional independence.

For many families, the idea of a budget reset can feel daunting. Will the funding be enough? How do we justify the support our loved ones need? At Nurturing Hands Allied Health, we believe that preparation is the key to moving from a place of stress to a place of empowerment. By understanding the new landscape, you can ensure your family continues to receive high-quality support while making every dollar of your NDIS funding work harder.

Here is our practical, step-by-step guide to navigating your next NDIS budget reset with confidence.

1. Audit Your Current Plan and Budget Pacing

Before you can plan for the future, you need a crystal-clear picture of the present. The first step in preparing for a reset is to conduct a mini-audit of your current spending. The NDIA is increasingly looking at budget pacing: how consistently you use your funds over the life of your plan.

Start by looking at your plan manager’s reports or your NDIS portal. Are there categories where you have a significant underspend? Conversely, are there areas where you are running out of funds too quickly?

In 2026, the NDIA is moving away from “emergency top-ups.” This means that if you spend your budget too quickly without a clear clinical reason, you may find yourself in a difficult position. On the other hand, a large underspend can sometimes be interpreted as a lack of need, which might lead to a reduction in future funding.

Pro Tip: If you have an underspend, identify the barriers. Was it a lack of available therapists? Was your child unwell? Having these answers ready for your review is vital.

2. Master the Art of Evidence Collection

In the current NDIS climate, “reasonable and necessary” is no longer just a phrase: it is a high bar that requires robust documentation. Evidence collection is the single most important thing you can do to protect your funding during a reset.

The NDIA wants to see how the funded supports are helping the participant achieve their goals and build independence. This is where your therapy team becomes your greatest ally. You should begin gathering updated reports at least three months before your plan review.

At Nurturing Hands, we work closely with your external Allied Health Professionals (such as Speech Pathologists or Physiotherapists) to provide detailed progress notes. While we don’t provide Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) or internal OT services, our Allied Health Assistants (AHAs) provide the “on-the-ground” data that makes these reports shine. We document the small wins: like a child finally being able to use a communication device independently or a participant mastering a new mobility skill at home.

3. Define Clear, Functional Goals

When your budget resets, the NDIA will look at your goals. In 2026, there is a massive shift toward capacity building. This means goals should focus on what the participant can do, rather than just the services they receive.

Instead of a goal like “To receive 20 hours of therapy,” try “To develop the fine motor skills required to dress myself independently for school.”

When your goals are functional and life-staged, it is much easier to justify the funding required to reach them. Take some time as a family to think about what “success” looks like over the next 12 months. Does it involve better social participation? Greater independence in the kitchen? Success in a workplace environment?

Our mobile therapy service is designed specifically to help meet these functional goals where they actually happen: in your home, at school, or in the workplace.

4. Maximise Your Funding with an Allied Health Assistant (AHA)

One of the most effective ways to stretch your NDIS budget is to utilise an Allied Health Assistant. In many cases, families find that their funding for high-level therapists (like senior Physiotherapists or Speech Pathologists) runs out halfway through the year because the hourly rates are quite high.

This is where Nurturing Hands excels. We provide qualified AHAs who work under the guidance and supervision of your existing external Allied Health Professionals. Because AHA rates are more affordable, you can often get double the amount of therapy hours for the same budget.

This “high-frequency” model is often much more effective for building skills. Instead of seeing a therapist once a fortnight, an AHA might visit your home twice a week to practice the exercises and strategies set out by your lead clinician. This consistent repetition is the secret sauce for real capacity building.

You can read more about how this works in our guide on how to maximise your NDIS funding using the AHA model.

5. Prepare for the Planning Meeting

The final step is the meeting itself. Whether it is with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or an NDIA Planner, you need to go in organised.

Bring a “Review Folder” that includes:

  • Your audit of current spending and budget pacing.
  • Recent reports from all therapists.
  • A list of your new, functional goals.
  • Examples of how your current supports (like your AHA) have led to real-world outcomes.
  • Quotes for any new equipment or specialised support you might need.

Don’t be afraid to speak up about what isn’t working. If a clinic-based model is too stressful and you’ve seen better results with a mobile therapy service, make sure that is documented. The more you can prove that your current support structure is effective, the more likely it is to be maintained or even increased.
