Hey there, Tribe!
If you’ve been keeping an eye on the NDIS landscape lately, you’ll know things are changing: fast. We’re officially into May 2026, and by now, we’ve all had to navigate the shifts that kicked in over the last year, including those big changes to how therapy is funded and the tightening of Core budgets.
One of the biggest questions I get from families and participants is: “How do I actually make my funding last the whole year without sacrificing the quality of my care?”
It’s a valid worry. With the price of professional therapy sitting high and travel billing being more restricted than ever, many people feel like they’re stuck between a rock and a hard place. But here’s the secret weapon that many NDIS participants are finally starting to lean into: Allied Health Assistants (AHAs).
At Nurturing Hands Allied Health P/L, we’ve seen first-hand how the AHA model isn’t just a “backup plan”: it’s actually the key to elevating care and getting more “bang for your buck” out of your NDIS plan.
The Financial Reality of NDIS Funding
Let’s talk numbers for a second, because we’re all about NDIS funding efficiency here. As of the 2025/2026 price guide updates, an hour with a senior professional like a Speech Pathologist or a Psychologist can take a massive chunk out of your budget. While those experts are essential for diagnosis, assessment, and creating your roadmap, having them come to your house every single week for implementation can drain a budget before you’ve even hit the halfway mark of your plan.
Allied Health Assistants generally cost significantly less per hour than a professional therapist. By utilising an AHA to deliver the “doing” part of your therapy, you can often double: or even triple: the number of sessions you receive. Instead of seeing a therapist once a month, you could be working with an AHA once a week.
Consistency is where the magic happens. Whether you’re working on mobility, communication, or daily living skills, doing the work frequently is what leads to real-world results.

The Collaborative Model: How It Works
It’s important to understand how we work, because we do things a little differently at Nurturing Hands. We don’t employ Occupational Therapists (OTs) or Physiotherapists in-house, and we don’t perform Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs).
Instead, we are the bridge. We work in a collaborative care model.
You likely already have an external OT or Physio that you know and trust. They are the ones who write your professional reports and set your clinical goals. Our AHAs then step in to take that plan off the paper and put it into action. We work under the guidance and supervision of your external professionals to ensure that every exercise, every communication strategy, and every sensory activity is exactly what the expert ordered.
This means you keep your specialist for the big-picture stuff, but you use our AHAs for the boots-on-the-ground implementation. It’s a team approach that ensures no one is working in a silo.
Why Quality Matters: The AHANA Standard
One of the reasons people are sometimes hesitant about AHAs is that they worry about the “quality” of care compared to a professional. That’s why we are so proud to be AHANA registered.
The Allied Health Assistants’ National Association (AHANA) is the peak body that sets the standards for our industry. Being a certified practising member means our team isn’t just “helping out”: they are trained, accredited professionals who adhere to a strict code of ethics and ongoing professional development.
When you see that AHANA logo, you know you’re getting someone who understands the NDIS inside and out, understands disability-related health supports, and is committed to a high standard of clinical safety. We aren’t just “support workers”; we are trained assistants who understand the why behind the therapy.

Real-World Therapy in Your Environment
One of our core beliefs at Nurturing Hands is that therapy shouldn’t just happen in a sterile clinic room with fluorescent lights. Real life happens in the kitchen, at the local park, in the classroom, or at your workplace.
Our mobile therapy benefits are huge. When an AHA comes to your home, they are working with the actual tools you use every day. If your goal is to cook a meal independently, we don’t practice in a “pretend” kitchen: we use your stove and your utensils. If a child is struggling with school anxiety, we can work with them in their actual school environment (with the school’s permission, of course).
This is what we mean by elevating care. It’s about moving beyond the clinical and into the functional. By practicing in your natural environment, the “carry-over” (how well you remember and use the skills) is much higher. You don’t have to figure out how to translate a clinic exercise to your home life because you learned it at home in the first place!
Maximising Your 2026 NDIS Plan
With the recent NDIS reforms 2026, there is a much bigger focus on “evidence-based” and “value-for-money” supports. Using an AHA is a textbook example of both. It’s evidence-based because high-frequency intervention is proven to work, and it’s value-for-money because it stretches your budget further.
If you are currently looking at your Capacity Building budget and wondering how to make it last, it might be time to look at the AHA model.
Here are a few ways our AHAs can help right now:
- Physical Support: Implementing exercise programs designed by your external Physiotherapist.
- Daily Living Skills: Working on routines, meal prep, and personal care strategies designed by your external OT.
- Communication: Practising speech and language exercises set by your external Speech Pathologist.
- Social Participation: Helping you get out into the community to practice social skills in real-time.

A Supportive, Lived-Experience Approach
I started Nurturing Hands because I know what it’s like to sit on your side of the table. Having Disability Lived Experience (Multiple Sclerosis and Rheumatoid Arthritis), I understand that some days are harder than others. I know that the NDIS can feel like a full-time job, and I know that you want people in your home who actually “get it.”
We aren’t a giant, faceless corporation. We are a supportive tribe. We choose our AHAs not just for their qualifications, but for their heart. We want people who are going to cheer you on when you hit a milestone and support you on the days when things feel a bit much.
Our approach is holistic. We don’t just see a “plan” or a “participant number”; we see a person with goals, dreams, and a family who cares about them.
Are You Ready to Elevate Your Care?
If you’re ready to see how an Allied Health Assistant can change the way you use your NDIS funding, we’d love to chat. Whether you’re looking for help with childhood apraxia of speech or you’re trying to make your NDIS count through better therapy outcomes, we are here to help.
Remember, you don’t need to change your existing therapists. We work with them to make your life easier and your funding go further.
